Pinning Down the NaN Lives Glitch in AKR2

I’ve finally started working on version 1.11 of A Koopa’s Revenge 2. It’s mostly a glitch fix run. In fact, the update will be entirely unnoticeable to most players.

That said, I need help tracking down this one glitch. I think I’ve got it fixed, but with no reliable way to cause it, I can’t be sure. So I’m asking for any information that could help me trigger the glitch. If someone knows how to do it, that would be great.

NaN Lives

The glitch causes the lives counter to read “NaN” instead of “FAIL” when you run out of lives. You’ll also fail to get a game over, and when you exit to the menu, you’ll see the game over screen. Saving then continuing the file results in the lives counter showing the infinity sign (an 8 on it’s side) and it’s so far been reported to occur in 5-2 and 3-4, but I suspect it can happen anywhere. It may also have something to do with getting multiple game overs.

P.S. I’m also looking for a reliable way to break the powerup visualisations. It creates a little white box on the character when you collect a powerup and use your reserve powerup at the same time.
